The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, is one of the top research universities in Spain with over 50.000 students per year that major in all fields of engineering. UPM has a large experience in European projects having participated in over 100 FP7 projects, coordinating over 20 of them. A considerable number of successful Spin-off companies from projects in the University labs have been created in the last decade, with some of them related to computer science and telecom industry.
UPM participates in the project through the Distributed Systems Lab (LSD). The main activity of the LSD is research on scalable and dependable distributed systems. Current work focuses on cloud computing, Platform as a Service, scalable complex event processing, scalable databases, scalable multi-tier systems. Regarding scientific excellence, LSD publishes regularly in the top conferences on distributed systems, dependability, and databases. LSD is also active in technology transfer activities to international and national companies.
The lab has developed the clustered version of the J2EE JOnAS application server that was distributed with Red Hat Linux before their acquisition of JBoss. LSD has also developed a BPEL engine that has been licensed to Bull that currently commercializes it as the BSOA Orchestra product. LSD has transferred technology to Ericsson Research to build a high performance distributed HLR system based on a real time database that has entered the production phase to start commercialisation. LSD has also developed a service oriented data warehouse product for Telefonica that is currently commercializing it. LSD has filed 3 patents in the last 3 years related to the European projects it has participated. LSD will co-found a startup that will commercialize the results from LeanBigData and from the CumuloNimbo FP7 project that LSD is coordinating.
LSD receives funding regularly from National, International, and Regional research funding agencies. The lab has coordinated 3 European projects (Adapt, CumuloNimbo, Stream) and participated in several other European projects in FP7.
